Sabretoothed Polar Bear

During a lecture on Pleistocene mammals, one of my students asked if there were any sabretoothed bears. I told him that I wasn’t aware of any fossil discoveries like this, but that even if there weren’t any, there should have been. So, I came up with this speculative portrait. Acrocanthosaurus atokensis

Life reconstruction, drawn during a class in Paleoart techniques offered by Cal State Monterey Bay. The color scheme is based on the Striped Hyena, whose habitat and lifestyle are similar to this wonderful early Cretaceous dinosaur. Painted in Procreate on an iPad.

Steller’s Jay

Done during a Drawtober challenge, to the prompt “Camping.” Steller’s Jays always remind me of the field work I did throughout grad school. I spent most of every June camping near my field site, and most mornings I was awoken by the dulcet cries of these birds in the tree just above my tent.
