Cygnus atratus
April 16, 2005: Subiaco Park, Subiaco, Western Australia
Decided to take an early morning walk to the park and when I walked out the door of Helen and Daniel’s home, the first thing I saw were these swans flying across the sky in front of me. I’d very much wanted to see these birds and was thrilled about the sighting, even though I only caught a short glimpse. They looked gorgeous flying through the sky – the contrast of black and white is lovely.

YAY! Finally saw more of these birds at VERY close range. I could have touched them as they begged for food. They seem to have a much longer and more flexible neck than the Mute Swans I’m used to seeing – they can bend those necks into a lot of different shapes.

Spotted from the window of H & D’s home, on our last morning in town. Nice to get decent photos of one of these birds in flight.
April 20, 2005: Kangaroo Island, South Australia
Saw a few of these, all of them in the water near the hotel. At night during our Penguin Tour, we also saw several of them near the protected penguin area. Our guide said they had cygnets, but I never spotted any of them.
